Getting US TV Shows In The UK

Britain a hotbed for illicit TV downloads from Reuters talks about the UK apparently being the biggest market for downloading pirated TV. Well, I can't say I haven't been tempted. Waiting ages to get shows from the US over here can drive me crazy. Driving you nuts? A few tips.

  • Get Sky One. You'll pay for this as part of a Sky satellite package or some cable packages, but you can get it as part of a package as low at 13 pounds or so. Many, many US shows come out only three to six months after the US debut. In addition, there aren't repeats. That means once you start, there's no dull waiting period mid-season. By the time the finale comes, we might only be a week or two behind the US. That was the case with Enterprise, for example. And for Battlestar Galactica, the first season -- it was a miracle that got us the show BEFORE the US. That was nice!

  • Watch E4. This is part of Freeview and Sky. I think it might even be a free-to-air channel requiring no subscription through Sky, assuming you have an old box sitting around. Many US shows -- even Showtime or HBO programs -- hit E4 in a fairly decent time and usually before they make it over to parent station Channel 4. ER, Nip/Tuck, The L Word -- all of them are free on E4.

  • Forget thinking you'll get some live feed of shows from the US. Believe me, I've looked. There may be an option out there I haven't found, but if so, it's hard to discover. The US satellites broadcasting to the US audience can't be seen by us over here, apparently -- and nothing else carries them. There is apparently some mystery box that those in the US military here can get with access to some semi-live transmissions for the US, but I could never get decent info about it -- nor could many get this.

  • Watch Fox News on Sky. Yeah, shock horror, because I'm no fan of the little flag-waving and often slanted stories to me. But it's live from the US. If there's an emergency happening over there, it's especially the place you'll see domestic news. CNN does the international thing over here and rarely interrupts with a domestic feed.

  • ABC News & CBS News show around midnight to 1 pm on the Sky News and BBC 24 channels. Look at the schedule and you'll see them. The main problem is by the time you get up the next morning to watch them, the news is way old.

hey danny, I was actually looking on Google to buy some american sweets and I came across your awesome page. Its really helpful for myself as I'm an English man trying to move to America to live and work etc. But i find it hard to understand all this about the U.S laws on immigration, whereas your an English/American citizen maybe you could explain to me how it works? and how I'd get to live over the pond? Please.. By the way, alluc.org and www.tv-links.co.uk will have most of the american TV shows on and theres no need for downloading them, their all streaming videos. Anyway hope to hear from you mate. Cheers Sam
