My Accidental Americans In Britain Mailing List
Way, way, way back in 1998, Yahoo rolled out Yahoo Clubs (now Yahoo Groups). I did a very short piece about it then. To write the piece, I created a Yahoo Club called Americans In Britain. I then immediately forgot about it. But unbeknownst to me, the list almost immediately started growing. Today, it has about 300 members and a nice archive of material on getting by as a Yank in the UK.
I must have done several things with the list without realizing. First, I made it an open list, so anyone could find it. Second, I chose to read messages only online. Since I never went back to check, I had no idea of the discussions that began almost immediately. I also must have left it open to anyone to sign up in the beginning. At some point, I also must have realized that it was alive, but I can't recall when. I know that in 2003 -- five years after the list had been going -- I had to moderate it for the first time. A fight broke out, and I had to restore order. I had to do that once more in, 2004. Not bad for a list left to run basically unattended and with over 1,000 messages. I feel bad about having been an absentee list owner. But I do get postings sent via email these days. Recently, members have talked about Money from US to UK and Renewing my Spousal Visa. Dig further, and there are topics like Working, Shipping to the UK, Fiancée visa and visiting while application is pending, On the whole dual citizenship thing (yeah, I'm probably going to do it, 'cause I'd like to vote) and more. Overall, in the days of blogs, I kind of like knowing a mailing list still works. C'mon by some time. You can read past posts and more on the list here.
