Gmail & Error 0x800CCC7D In Outlook 2003

I may be sticking with Gmail, but will Gmail stick with me? Today, one of those dreaded Outlook error messages appeared:

Task 'pop.gmail.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC7D) : 'Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. If SSL-secured connections have worked in the past, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Gmail does support SSL connections. In fact, that's what it tells you to use. It worked fine yesterday and all this week. Today, I can download just fine. I can even send a test email using Outlook's own connection verification system just fine. So what's the problem with sending a regular message out?

Over at Lockergnome, it was suggested to increase the timeout to 2 minutes. Did it, didn't work.

Time to get more drastic. Another suggestion was to delete my Outlook 2003 account settings and set them back up again (instructions here). There's absolutely no reason I should have to do this, since all my settings were fine. But I did it anyway. And it worked.

Hope it does for you, if you're having similar problems.

I habe the same problem that you.
Saludos.

If your Outlook 2003 GMAIL SMTP settings were working and then you get the dreaded "Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections" message, try this simplest of workarounds first: Close Outlook (and all messages/calendar/contacts) and then reopen it. Sometimes very frustrating problems have simple solutions...I hope this works for you like it did for me.

I had the same problem. Gmail had worked great for months then one day get the SSL not supported error. I quit out of outlook and unplugged my PDA to kill the sync connection then restart outlook and the email set fine. Maybe its time to look at switching to Thunderbird...

I had the same problem and tried some of suggestions posted on this thread. They worked but only temporarily. For instance, one of the suggestions said restart outlook. This works but is only a temporary solution - the minute you try sending another email out using Outlook via your Gmail account, the error will pop up again.

This is because Gmail requires you to explicitly tell Outlook that the outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. In order to do this, do the following:

1. In Outlook (2003), click on Tools and select Email Accounts...

2. In the window that pops up, the default should say View or Change existing email accounts. Click on Next.

3. Select your Gmail account and click on Change.

4. In the window that pops up, click on More Settings.

5. In the window that pops up, click on the Outgoing server tab and check the box that says "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication". Select "Use same settings as my incoming server" as your option.

OK/Next/Finish through the wizard. If required restart Outlook and VOILA - problem solved - permanently!!!

Concerning Lil A's comments... this is only correct if you failed to setup your gmail account in Outlook correct the first time.

For those of you who setup everything correct and it works great for a while...then gives you this error .... it is a bug with Outlook 2003. It only happens on forwarded messages and I apologize I have not figured out why as of yet. It is not just a gmail thing, I have experienced it with a number of other email clients.

The only thing that works is to restart your Outlook.

Cerebrate might be right... time to switch to Thunderbird!

Peace!
