Gmail, Can I Have My Mail Via Pop? Computer Says No: Error 0X800CC92

So much to do, so much to write -- and major hassle factor as Gmail holds my email hostage, pretending my username and password isn't valid.

OK, I can get in via the web. I can send mail via SMTP. But if I want to POP download, that's not happening. That hasn't been happening for at least 5 hours now.

Outlook gives me this error:

Error (0x800CCC92) : Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server responded: -ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.

Argh! Argh, argh, argh! Give me my mail!

My username and password are fine, believe me. I didn't suddenly change them in Outlook or Mailwasher, for that matter. Gmail's just having a bad day and taking me along with it.

I've been through this before, as covered here. I haven't seen any widespread complaints, so perhaps it's just me. If so, I don't know why. And if it's more than just me, I sure wish Gmail would have some type of status report so I'd know.

How about checking help? Sure, they've got a topic on that. POP: I keep receiving prompts to enter my username and password basically says make sure you've entered your info correctly and that you aren't checking your email too often. Neither is the situation with me. It would be nice if they'd added something like:

The problem could also be us! From time to time, we've been known to have an off-day. Check our network status page to see if this is a reported issue or try back later.

I had this problem too when setting up Gmail Pop for my girlfriend in Outlook 2003 - no luck at all.

I tried it in Mozilla Thunderbird instead (I recently switched over myself), and hey presto - no problems!

Is this sudden Microsoft incompatibility a coincidence, or will this be the next Mozilla product (after Firefox) that Google start pushing?
