Catching Up On Flicks - Aeon Flux Versus Just Friends
Serious airplane time today, a nice long 10-11 hour flight from the UK to California. That's plenty of time to watch a movie or two as a break between doing email on my laptop. I decided to go for Aeon Flux (bad choice) and to see the rest of Just Friends (excellent choice). I saw half of that on my last flight coming back from Canada, but we landed before the end.
Oh, Charlize. You let me down. I mean, she's so good in everything. When I saw the poster that Aeon Flux had been made into a movie, I thought wow. Then double-wow to have Charlize Theron doing it. But she just never seemed to click into the role. Then again, the entire MTV film product felt a bit half-hearted. Yes, I know, apparently everyone already knows this. But if it's not a kids movie, I never seem to see it when it comes out in the theaters -- and when I do get to the odd film for grown-ups, we're often six months behind in Britain. That delay long ago broke my Southern Californian heart. Anyway, Just Friends was a great surprise. Matt blogged earlier this year about playing catch up by seeing The 40 Year Old Virgin and having it well surpass what he was expecting from the film. That resonated with me -- I had exactly the same feeling, laughing out loud constantly to a film I figured would bring a chuckle, at most -- if I was lucky. Just Friends was the same way -- something I thought might sort of keep me amused but instead had me rolling. Anna Faris, she of Scary Movie fame, stole the show in her send-up of a Britney Spears bubblehead. She's a supporting character turns up often, and her appearances are the best part.
