Brushfire Smoke Over Newport Beach

Next to earthquakes, fires are probably a regular Southern California natural disaster that you get used to. We've had heavy Santa Ana winds that blow hot and hard from out of the mountains the past day. The heat has been sparking fires including one that popped up a few miles away in near Irvine's Santiago Canyon.

The news had been dominated by the Malibu fire, but I could tell something was up nearby when going out rollerblading last night. Ash started falling like rain, and a huge cloud of smoke blotted out the sky:

Those two bright lights are airplanes coming in to land at John Wayne Airport. Normally the fly out to sea, but with the wind reversed, they had to approach from the ocean -- and go right through the ash.

Above, you can see how the smoke was almost like a cloud, blotting out the dying sunlight.

Wow, what a welcome home from California! Hope you are enjoying your vacation and continue to stay safe. Great to meet you at SMX Social Media in NYC. Thanks again for the great conference and for sharing the taxi ride to JFK. My plane was 6 hours delayed. Hope you had better luck! Best, Kate Thomas

Gee, Danny, you come back to sunny California and look what happens! ;-)

Seriously, it was really strange to be in Palm Springs, 100 miles east of you, and have clear blue skies and gorgeous weather while all of that was going on. The wind was blowing it all west and out to sea. We had a lot of folks from the coast in hotels here waiting to find out if they had a home to return to. I'm sure it helped a little to have the pool and sun, but tense nonetheless.

We had folks calling from all over the country checking on us because it was all that was on the news. We were nestled safe in the arms of the San Jacinto mountains.

By the way, I can tell you absolutely love Orange County. I'm sure a lot of people are like me and curious about what led you to rainy, cold, merry old England?

My wife's British, so we moved back about 12 years ago. Before I arrived, Barbours and wellies had been acquired to ease the transition :)

Ah, the things we do for love! I guessed as much. Well, I'm sure you'll come back to visit as often as you can. At this point in my life they'd have to tear me away from the warm sunshine at gunpoint. I tried a winter in the mountains here and found out real fast how much I hate the cold!

BTW - love the Daily Searchcast!
