Great advice! I really liked the section on categorizing. I've found that to be the best answer for dealing with email, so I end up with a lot fewer in my inbox.
What I do is set aside 20 mins twice a day and work through all the emails in my inbox, then when I've dealt with them, they go into the category folder (with my reply if necessary) so I can reference it later if I need to.
My inbox only holds emails I haven't dealt with yet and I do my best to keep that to less than 10 at any one time.

thank you for some nice tips. i came across a whitepaper recently about how part of the problem of the email torrent was using email for the wrong things - file collaboration, managing tasks, scheduling etc. they speak about the "law of meeting coordination" where when email is used in group situations, N mails can evoke N squared responses. made a lot of sense. you can check it out here - http://www.hyperoffice.com/business-email-overload/

Some great tips here, thank you! The book Getting Things Done (GTD) also has been helpful to me. My practice for "touch once" is if I can respond to an email in 2 minutes or less, just do it now. If I can't deal with it immediately I move it out of my InBox to a folder called ActionRequired which I review a few times a day. My goal is to have an empty InBox whenever I have a few minutes to look at it.
