Heh — I’m a vodka fan, so I got a kick out of learning this today. Orange County has its own homegrown vodka — Bu-Tay Vodka! I gather it’s made or distributed out of OC, and I got another fun surprise. It’s made with water from Bend, Oregon. Bend’s long been a hub of search [...]

Somewhat related to my post about the LA Times death watch, the Christian Science Monitor has announced it will no longer publish a daily print paper in 2009. You can still get it weekly, but the plan is to move operations more heavily to the web. It’s apparently the first US national daily to drop [...]

I was fortunate enough to have started my career in journalism during a real old fashioned newspaper war, one waged between the Los Angeles Times — its Orange County edition — and the Orange County Register. In 1989 and through the early 90s, the papers invested in people and newsprint to win the readership of [...]

When I was a boy, I thought I’d live in space. I believed this with such certainty that I had a resigned acceptance about the things I would be leaving behind. Things as in possessions, in particular the many spaceship models I’d built from kits. I’d look at them before getting ready for sleep, thinking [...]

I keep reading that this is the US presidential election where the campaigns gets the web. The Obama campaign, in particular, I gather has set new records in fundraising and outreach through the internet. Yet as a first time political campaign contributor — a contributor to Obama’s campaign — I’ve been left pretty cold by [...]

I love America. But am I “pro-American?” Until recently, I had no idea my “pro-hood” was in question. Now I have the McCain-Palin campaign suggesting I don’t live in “real” America or that some parts of America are more “heartland-like” or “patriotic” than where I live. Knock it off. It’s not right. The American people [...]

Just something interesting from our local paper. Newport Beach voted this week to ban foam cups from restaurants, in an effort to help keep its beaches clean. The law has an interesting background. Local high school students pushed for it, and the local restaurant association actually backed the ban rather than fight it. One reason [...]

A sad story from reading the Los Angeles Times this weekend. A homeless man was doused by someone with gasoline, set alight and died. Who does something like this? Set someone on fire for kicks? Moreover, it’s a sad tale of a man who not only was down on his luck but apparently didn’t beg, [...]
