I may be sticking with Gmail, but will Gmail stick with me? Today, one of those dreaded Outlook error messages appeared:
Task ‘pop.gmail.com – Sending’ reported error (0x800CCC7D) : ‘Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. If SSL-secured connections have worked in the past, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).’
Gmail does support SSL connections. In fact, that’s what it tells you to use. It worked fine yesterday and all this week. Today, I can download just fine. I can even send a test email using Outlook’s own connection verification system just fine. So what’s the problem with sending a regular message out?
Over at Lockergnome, it was suggested to increase the timeout to 2 minutes. Did it, didn’t work.
Time to get more drastic. Another suggestion was to delete my Outlook 2003 account settings and set them back up again (instructions here). There’s absolutely no reason I should have to do this, since all my settings were fine. But I did it anyway. And it worked.
Hope it does for you, if you’re having similar problems.

I habe the same problem that you.
Saludos.
If your Outlook 2003 GMAIL SMTP settings were working and then you get the dreaded “Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections” message, try this simplest of workarounds first: Close Outlook (and all messages/calendar/contacts) and then reopen it. Sometimes very frustrating problems have simple solutions…I hope this works for you like it did for me.
I had the same problem. Gmail had worked great for months then one day get the SSL not supported error. I quit out of outlook and unplugged my PDA to kill the sync connection then restart outlook and the email set fine. Maybe its time to look at switching to Thunderbird…

I had the same problem and tried some of suggestions posted on this thread. They worked but only temporarily. For instance, one of the suggestions said restart outlook. This works but is only a temporary solution – the minute you try sending another email out using Outlook via your Gmail account, the error will pop up again.
This is because Gmail requires you to explicitly tell Outlook that the outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. In order to do this, do the following:
1. In Outlook (2003), click on Tools and select Email Accounts…
2. In the window that pops up, the default should say View or Change existing email accounts. Click on Next.
3. Select your Gmail account and click on Change.
4. In the window that pops up, click on More Settings.
5. In the window that pops up, click on the Outgoing server tab and check the box that says “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”. Select “Use same settings as my incoming server” as your option.
OK/Next/Finish through the wizard. If required restart Outlook and VOILA – problem solved – permanently!!!
Concerning Lil A’s comments… this is only correct if you failed to setup your gmail account in Outlook correct the first time.
For those of you who setup everything correct and it works great for a while…then gives you this error …. it is a bug with Outlook 2003. It only happens on forwarded messages and I apologize I have not figured out why as of yet. It is not just a gmail thing, I have experienced it with a number of other email clients.
The only thing that works is to restart your Outlook.
Cerebrate might be right… time to switch to Thunderbird!
Peace!
I have been supporting a client with a similar issue. the guys at the University of Minesota have 2 great suggested fixes:
1. Clearing the SSL cache
2. Adjusting the Anti-virus mail scanning settings.

Clear SSL Cache for Outlook and Outlook Express http://www1.umn.edu/securclt/troubleshooting/mscachessl.html.
Hi, I found this article after having the same problem.
By changing the outgoing port to 465 in Outlook, I solved the problem.
Kind regards
Daniel
Thanks to Jason Hynds! This appears to have fixed the ongoing problem in Outlook 2002.
Here are the steps for clearing the SSL Cache:
Clear SSL certificate cache for Outlook and Outlook Express
- Close the e-mail program, Outlook or Outlook Express.
- Open the Control Panel and then Internet Options.
- Go to the Content tab.
- Click the Clear SSL State button.
- Start the e-mail program again.
Thx Bo.
I have been struggling with this off and on for a year. I tried all your suggestions, but the only one that worked for me was the post from Daniel Lewis. Thanks so much!
Hey,
Thanks that worked. I had four messages stuck in my inbox that just sent after I deleted the account settings and recreated them. Not sure what is going on, however my PC has been downloading updates everyday.
We had two gmail accounts on two different computers (both using Outlook 2003 and POP) that would not send mail due to this error. Resetting the SSL cache did not work. Temporally changing from smtp.gmail.com to smtp.googlemail.com allowed a test e-mail to be sent, but it took a long time. So I changed it back to smtp.gmail.com and found this solution: unlock the google account via this web page:
https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
This caused the Outlook outgoing POP mail to work IMMEDIATELY. But the accounts weren’t locked in any other way – you could log in to the web-based gmail and send e-mail, for instance.
At least this solved the problem – wish I understood why it happened.
Hey,
I got a temporary fix for Gmail
1. Click Tools>Email Accounts
2. View or change exisiting email accounts
3. Select Gmail and click change
4. Click More Settings
5. Click Advanced
6. I changed outgoing Server to 25
Don’t know if this will work for you guys. Best of luck
Thanks for the instruction Bo on how to clear the Cache. That did it for me. I was ready to pull out the sledge hammer!
Stop using outlook.
thanks for all the suggestions guys, but i try all the above solution and nothings work for me, just one day opening my outlook and fix by its self. i hope i know what is the problem…thanks:)
I went back into my account settings, changed checked the SSL and changed the port to 465. The test email did work. However, now my outgoing messages are still in the outbox and refuse to be sent.
okay, the emails eventually sent after restarting. Yay. No more dreaded error message!
i think clear SSL and change the port to 465 with restarting will fix the problem…hehehe now i can use my outlook with no problem.
I changed to port 25 and left the SSL enabled and sending mail works fine. Tried changing back to 465 and it failed again. I’m leaving the sending settings at port 25 with SSL.
Thanks you Jason Hynds.
I was using Avast antivirus and fixed the problem by inhibiting it’s email actions. Worked a treat! Changing ports had no effect for me.
Quitting and re-opening worked for me…
I have been successfully accessing my gmail acct (port 465, SSL) from outlook 2002 for about a year now and recently I started getting these error messages. I also tried port 587 but it would not work. My ISP is Earthlink / Time warner.
I closed outlook & cleared the SSL certificates in control panel but it did not help.
Solution:
I unchecked “Internet Email Auto-Protect” in Symantec Antivirus Corp edtion v10.1.7.7000. And the problem goes away but as soon as I check that box in norton it comes back. Thanks for the tip about AV, I would have thought of that. 12/16/09
Dan Lewis’s suggestion worked for me as well. Thanks Dan!
Tried all of the suggestions in this list. Nothing worked.
Then found another suggestion elsewhere: change smtp port to 587.
That fixed it.
Wondering if this is MS not so gentle nudge to upgrade from Outlook 2003.
Thanks to Jason and Mick. Port changes made no difference nor any of the other Outlook changes noted in this comments string. However, in a last throw of the dice I opened up Avast and deselected the outgoing email scan, closed down and restarted the pc and hey presto the outbox items all cleared.
Thanks again guys.
Tried all suggestions. Bear’s suggestion to change smtp port to 587 is the one that finally worked.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Tried them all. Only thing that worked was removing the email account from outlook 2003 and re-creating it. We’ll see if it lasts.
Bo,s SSL suggestion worked for me and i’m on 587 using live mail of course ! But does anyone know how to activate winmail in windows 7 !
Well I have to say to all trying to get there email to work, it’s best to download the OL connector which will link live to your outlook…..sometimes ! Good look
Tahn you so much Bo
Excellent stuff — clearing the SSL cached solved it for me too!
I tried several of the things above with mixed results. One thing I noticed is that Google Calendar Sync sometimes causes a copy of Outlook to get stuck open as a hidden task. I killed off an orphan Outlook using the task manager, reset the SSL cache and the outbox became unstuck.
-Max
just change it to port 587 for smtp
@ra – just comment without bothering to read the thread.
I try most of the stuff, but the only that worked was recreating the account
Thanks! Worked for me too!
hey folks, tried all that and still it wouldnt work. Finally I read up about IMAP settings in pop and forwarding in the gmail settings. By turning IMAP off it resolved all of the problems, hope this helps, Scott
Tried all the fixes without result and finally Scott’s suggestion to turn off IMAP in gmail. That worked. Thanks.
Clearing SSL under internet options worked for me,
on Win7 / Outlook2003!!
Thanks!!!!!
Hi to everyone! I tried the first solution (delete the account from MS Outlook 2003 and created it again) and worked fine!!!
Thanks a lot!

Hi
I tryed all the suggestions and non worked, i even deleted the account and it works for a day, next day same thing i just can’t fix the problem.
Anyone any more suggestions?
@Buffman — thank you, you’re right, the simplest solution to close and restart Outlook worked perfectly. Thank you!!!
To OUTLOOK 2003 users…… the solution below
Change the server timeout from 1m to 2m and it will be fixed
