Thanks for the great article Danny. I see you wrote this more than 1 year ago. Did anything happen with this? I have a proposal: Outlaw skateboards, Surreys, etc. during the black ball only. This is the lifeguards' universal way of telling beach-goers that it's crowded. Perhaps the lifeguards should have black ball jurisdiction over the boardwalk as well. Danny please send me a personal email, I'm very interested in finding out all the developments.

Picture 2 is right outside my first apartment in NB! I'm surprised it wasn't my old landlord's dog you got a picture of.

I don't live there anymore so admittedly I didn't read this whole post. In case you didn't touch on the parking issue for those unlucky residents without garages or driveways, I think that's probably the worst issue and the thing I remember hating the most. Every day when I got home from work I'd either find myself screaming obscenities or singing hallelujah. It was a horrible 5 to 30 minute process to have to go through on a daily basis.

How suiting you posted this on the eve of the most hectic day of the year there.

<B>I agree with John. Banning Sk8boarding is RIDICULOUS! Rollerbladers are 10x more hazardous. The parking problem in Balboa is bad enough, if I have to park 1 mile from my house, why can't i skateboard from point A to B. Its absolutely BS!! lame!

The banning of skateboards is flat out B.S. Newport Beach has the largest amount of longboarders (a type of skating not associated with tricks) in Orange County. Skaters can break more easily and more efficiently than rollerbladers by using a method called "foot-breaking". I can go from 15mph to a dead stop within 3 feet using the foot-breaking method. Just about every skateboarder can foot-break, or learn to do so within minutes. The ban on skateboards was because of the bad stereotype that the city beieves, not because of actual problems. In 1992, somebody from the city was quoted saying "Frankly, I would rather see skatebords banned from the city". I would be more than willing to demonstrate foot-breaking in front of the city board, and provide comparisons of other breaking methods from rollerblading and cycling.

When my son was younger I was a little bit bummed that I couldn't take him for a walk on the boardwalk. Being a young child he was prone to darting to the side without notice and (as with most boys) you just can't get him to pay attention to his surroundings. The solution was to just enjoy the boardwalk on Balboa island since bikes et al were forbidden. Now that he is old enough to ride we enjoy the Boardwalk on the Penninsula and are thankfull that bikes are allowed. I guess what I am saying is that if people want to walk without fear of getting hit, the island is a great alternative. Widening the boardwalk would be great, lenghtening it to the wedge would be even better. But banning bikes would be a shame. It's a classic spot to just cruise along the beach. And yes, the skateboard ban should be lifted. That strip of sidewalk needs to be kept safe, but too much regulation will kill the "anything goes" attitude that makes it so much fun.

Danny

Really good stuff. We have many boardwalks here in NJ may fav being Spring Lake which runs alll the way to Belmar and vice versa. It's wider in many parts it seems than Balboa. It seems there is to much going on the Balboa boardwalk. I know many NJ shore communities, we say shore, limit bike access to certain times as well as dogs. Bottom line a boardwalk is meant for walking and jogging if your into that.

Best,

I never knew a board walk could have so many valid issues, it was good reading about it in detail. If there is more congestion even with just pedestrians then I think the widening of the board walk should be considered and with the rules set and applied it only a matter of time before people realize it as a second nature. An initial change does take time but the long term approach would be more helpful.
