First sea lions began sinking boats here in Newport Beach. Then a sea lion seized control of a Harbor Patrol boat. Now we’re not even safe in our own homes, as they are attacking us there.
OK, actually, it’s kind of sweet. A sea lion pup somehow got up onto the roof of a home not too far from me on the Balboa Peninsula. Why, there’s even a video!
The pup, named Fiddler (get it, Fiddler on the Roof), was safely captured and sent to a marine mammal shelter, before being released in the future.
Mike Kai, who found the unexpected visitor on his roof, blogs it all here, and the Orange County Register has a nice account, as well. He lives near 46th Street meets the ocean. The pup apparently came up from the beach, then made it up two or three flights of outside stairs to the roof.
Fiddler now has his own Facebook fan page with 690 fans to far. No news if he plans to be on Twitter.

Geez! How far away from the beach/water are you? That has got to be quite the adventure for him to get up to the roof. Cool story!
I’m about three blocks back. To reach my house, a sea lion would have to cross a busy boulevard. I don’t think they’d make it! But it sounds like this house was right on the beach. So the pup flipped along the sand, found the stairs and up he went.
This is way too cute. And I’m relieved it turned out well for the baby sea lion.
Great story, and glad he made it safely off the roof. Those guys sure are cute, no matter how bad they smell. Out here in Georgia, the only thing climbing on our roofs are tea party weirdos and anti-abortionists…I’d prefer the sea lion!
