Search Life Meets Real Life — My Slides & Video

I blogged earlier about being asked to present a talk called “Search Life Meets Real Life” at Gnomedex. I’ve just done that talk, and the slide for those who are interested are below (sorry, the animations don’t work correctly on one of them, “Google StreetView, Cool Or Not.” But I’ve allowed people to download the file, so maybe it’ll work better that way).

In the questions after my talk, I was asked about particular limits I try to set in sharing and explained some of what I’ve thought about in terms of my kids. Being Social Online & Protecting Your Kids is my past post with more about that. Also in the slides, there’s a stereotypical picture of a “grandma” style librarian. I used that on purpose so I could joke that if anyone thinks that’s how librarians are now, life has totally changed and they should lose that image.

Postscript: The video of my presentation is now available:

Danny, this might be useful (or not) next time you give a talk like this: Richland, WA, just renamed a section/neighborhood of the city to match what Google Maps calls it:

Not really controversial or a conflict, but perhaps unique….

Thinking of dropping your link spam? Consider this. Seriously, STOP & READ. The guy who runs Google's spam fighting team? I know him pretty well. In fact, it's sort of a joke between us to see what's the latest absurd link drop I can share. So if you want your site to be a poster child on his idiots wall -- and probably to encounter a Google penalty -- go ahead, drop your link. It's nofollow anyway, plus I do have built-in spam fighting and what gets past that usually gets nabbed in a few minutes to a few hours. So you got to ask yourself. Are you feeling lucky?
